Sage Patanjali about 2000 years ago was the first to systematically codify the ancient science of Yoga into 196 terse aphorisms. These sutras are the most profound study of the human psyche where Patanjali describes the enigma of human existence. He shows how through the practice of yoga we can transform ourselves; gain mastery over the mind and emotions; overcome obstacles to our spiritual evolution.  The yoga described here is not the exercise yoga rather the yoga of personal transformation.

These aphorisms where channeled to Patanjali from the deity Lord Muruga (Sanatkumara).  In a similar manner, Paula channels this ancient wisdom for today into a personal program of transformation from her relationship with Sanatkumara.

Yoga first began as a spiritual practice to enlighten the mind and release personal suffering and limitation.  In the yoga sutras, Patanjali references the inner Self, disciplining the mind by focusing thoughts and feelings to understand the inner YOU.  The yoga sutras lay out a plan of building a relationship with your inner self thus knowing ‘YOU’.  Without a relationship with the inner “YOU” we often wander through life without direction and become lost.  This is the fundamental statement of the yoga sutras—find the inner Self and build a relationship.

Emotional patterns are the foundation in which you build a life. They serve and limit. Feelings such as joy and happiness are contagious and everyone wants to share them. On the other hand, fear, anger, confusion, doubt, and unworthiness create anxiety and a feeling of separateness.  However, all these feelings make you a whole person.  It is the embrace of all feelings and thoughts that awaken you to a greater aspect of “YOU” and release personal suffering.

Developed by Paula Muran, Off the Mat Yoga is a result of her innate wisdom of the yoga sutras and Buddhism. These are principles she was taught in her own awakening process. The program guides us through self inquiry, dialogue and meditation to unite the lower cravings and higher Self wisdom so we become spiritually free.

Off the Mat Yoga takes a deeper look at the aspects in life that keep us locked in a posture of separation. Feelings of unhappiness, confusion, worry, fears and low self-esteem stem from a disconnection from the true Self. Emotional patterns, mental thoughts and beliefs become uncovered allowing fears and unworthiness the liberty to release, as spiritual freedom prevails.

In hatha yoga the philosophy is that the physical body creates restrictions that often mirror emotional constrictions that make it difficult to twist, bend and hold postures. How we feel and what we think are the door openers to develop a deeper connection to the Divine and opens the body to fall deeper into hatha poses.
